Prostate cancer (PC) is the most frequently diagnosed malignancy among men in Canada, carrying a lifetime risk of approximately one in three. This significant incidence rate necessitates the establishment of a comprehensive and strategically organized supportive care infrastructure. The journey through a PC diagnosis, treatment, and survivorship presents considerable complexities that extend far beyond clinical management, creating profound psycho-social needs for patients and their families.

The psychological distress associated with PC is compounded by significant clinical uncertainties. For instance, Cancer Care Ontario (CCO) maintains a position against an organized, population-based screening program for prostate cancer, citing the potential harms of over-diagnosis and over-treatment. While this reflects a cautious, evidence-based approach to managing early detection, it underscores the ambiguity patients face in diagnosis and subsequent management decisions. Navigating high-stakes treatment choices, dealing with post-treatment side effects (such as incontinence or sexual dysfunction), and managing the anxiety of potential recurrence create an emotional landscape where formalized support is indispensable.

Support groups serve a critical function in this environment by providing a peer-driven forum for understanding and hope. These groups offer essential emotional and empathetic support, reducing feelings of isolation and providing practical advice rooted in shared, lived experience. They function as volunteer-led, self-help mechanisms organized by survivors for men diagnosed with the disease, as well as their partners and caregivers. This collective wisdom complements professional clinical care by addressing the everyday realities of life during and after treatment.

There are two sections under each province. The Support Groups section is dedicated, prostate-specific peer support which offers an environment focused on direct man-to-man experience sharing and education, allowing for open discussion of sensitive, gender-specific issues related to treatment and survivorship. The PC Information section is a general information and resources specific to the the province.
